Automotive Airbag Manufacturer Takata Pleads Guilty

According to the news agency Reuters, Japan’s Takata Corporation, the world’s leading manufacturer of airbags, agreed to plead guilty to criminal wrongdoing and was imposed a fine of $1 billion-dollars to resolve a U.S. Justice Department probe into ruptures of its air bag inflators. Those ruptures are linked to as many as 16 deaths worldwide, and an additional 183 injuries as a result of their deployment. Three former senior Takata executives were also charged with falsifying airbag inflator test results which concealed the defect according to the indictment. This automotive industry recall is the world’s largest according to industry sources.

Takata has agreed to pay a $25 million-dollar fine, an additional $125 million-dollars to a victims compensation fund, which includes any future incidents, and a $850 million-dollar settlement to compensate automakers for the massive recall costs.  Takata has also agreed to make significant reforms in its processes and will be on probation under the oversight of an appointed independent monitor for three years.

Shigehisa Takada, chairman and chief executive of Takata, said in a statement that this is a major step in resolving the airbag inflator issue and “deeply regrets the circumstances that have led to this situation”.

According to the investigation, Takata, as early as 2000, has been submitting false test reports to automakers to induce them to buy their airbags. Takata has made more than $1 billion-dollars on the sale of their airbags to automakers worldwide. At Muffler City Auto Repair, we believe that if your vehicle is equipped with one of these Takata airbags you need to return it to your vehicles manufacturers dealership for a replacement airbag. The chances of this defective product not performing properly, in the event of a collision is a risk we don’t feel is worth taking. Many customers are just playing the odds and not adhering to the recall that has been offered to cars effected by the recall.

Largest Automotive Recall in U.S. History

  • Since 2008, when Takata issued its first airbag recall involving 4,200 vehicles, investigators thought that only Honda’s were affected, since all of the confirmed deaths but one occurred in a Honda vehicle. It has been determined that the deaths and injuries incurred were the result of a propellant device that can shoot shrapnel-like fragments into the driver when deployed. Today’s recall may involve as many as 30 million vehicles in the U.S. alone and according to industry sources affects almost every major automobile manufacture in the world.

Ron Evans owner of Muffler City Auto Repair suggests if you have a brand of car, truck, pick-up truck or SUV named below, you should immediately contact your dealership to see if your specific vehicle is equipped with a Takata airbag and get it replaced as soon as possible. The list includes Audi, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Daimler, Dodge/Ram, Ferrari, Ford, GMC, Honda, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mercury, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Pontiac, Saab, Scion, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota, and Volkswagen.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

The NHTSA is demanding that auto manufacturers make replacing an estimated 69 million defective airbags their top priority. Older vehicles and vehicles residing in hot and humid climates like Florida should be given top priority for replacement. This is very concerning to Automotive Garage Owners like Ron Evans of Muffler City Auto Repair. The risk of an airbag deployment occurring, even in the most minor of accidents, could result in launching shrapnel into drivers and passengers causing injuries and sometimes death. This is a very dangerous situation and should not be taken lightly. Accidents cause enough damage in this country but being in an accident and having a safety feature like an airbag injury you, is avoidable.
